Who this is

What's Queer is a small, independently-run listings site for Manchester's LGBTQ+ events, groups and venues. This policy explains what information the site collects when you use it, and what happens to it. It's written in plain language on purpose — if anything here is unclear, use the Report an Issue form and ask.

What we collect

If you submit an event, venue or group: the details you enter about the event/venue/group itself (name, date, venue, description, links, etc.). We don't currently ask for your own name or email as the submitter — just don't put personal information you don't want public in a free-text field, since submitted content is reviewed and may be published.

If you use "Report an Issue" or "Request a Removal": the message you write, plus an optional contact detail if you choose to leave one (it's optional on both forms — you can submit either without it).

Technical/security data: like most websites, our server briefly processes your IP address to prevent abuse (e.g. stopping one visitor from submitting hundreds of reports a minute) and logs failed admin sign-in attempts for security. This isn't stored against your identity or used for tracking.

On your own device only: your browser's local storage remembers events you've saved and your image-display preference, purely so the site remembers your choices next visit. This never leaves your device or gets sent to us.

Fonts: this page loads its typeface from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a direct request to Google to fetch it — standard practice for most websites, mentioned here for completeness.

Analytics: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first, cookieless analytics tool — it doesn't use tracking cookies or fingerprinting, and reports aggregate traffic patterns rather than tracking individuals.

Popularity counts: when you save an event, we add one to a running total for that event, so we can see which listings people are most interested in. The number belongs to the event, not to you — nothing is recorded about who saved it, and it isn't linked to anything else you do on the site.

What gets looked at: we count a few things that happen on the site — an event being opened, an advert being shown on screen or clicked, and a link out to a venue's own website being followed (we record only which website, never the full address you went to). These counts belong to the event or the advert, never to you. No cookie is set, nothing at all is stored on your device, and your IP address is not kept with them. We deliberately keep no way of telling that two of these came from the same person, so there is no profile to build, sell, or hand over. If your browser sends a “Do Not Track” signal, we count nothing whatsoever.

Why we count adverts: a business paying for a placement is told how many times it was shown and clicked. That is an aggregate total for their advert — it never includes anything about who saw it, because we don't have that and never collect it.

What we don't do

How long we keep it

Report and removal-request messages are kept until an admin has reviewed them and manually deleted the entry — there's currently no automatic expiry, so if you'd like something removed sooner, ask via the same form. Published event/venue/group listings stay live until they're archived (past one-off events) or removed by an admin.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you can ask what data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email [email protected], or use the Report an Issue form if you'd rather. You also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), if you're unhappy with how we've handled something.

Children

This site covers nightlife and adult social events and isn't intended for children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the site after a change means you're okay with the updated version.
